About Sera Monastery
Hidden deep behind the Himalayan Mountains in the secret kingdom of Tibet, Sera existed and thrived for over five centuries as the greatest of monastic institutions. Founded in 1419 by the eminent master Je-Tsong-Kapa and his primary disciples, Sera was a university of epic proportions, producing an endless, spectacular array of enlightened masters and saint scholars.
With vast libraries of sacred wisdom, it was a storehouse of ancient teachings, matching in splendor the great universities of the modern world.
Following the complete takeover of Tibet in 1959, this phenomenal cultural tradition relocated to India. During the years leading up to the takeover, the Chinese communists destroyed over 6000 Tibetan monasteries.
The administration of Sera escaped over the Himalayan ranges into a town called Bylakuppe. It is here that the Tibetans, experiencing great hardship, undertook the task of rebuilding the Sera Monastic University.
Now, with the help of people like you, The Sera Mey Tsawa Khangtsen Project will continue the redevelopment of one of the ‘colleges’ of this great Tibetan learning institution.
